Race week in the city
🇯🇵 The Tokyo Marathon is the last of my six Abbott World Marathon Majors. (Don't say it. I know.) The pre-race week is the project. The race is the celebration.
Where to stay: Shinjuku. Specifically the Park Hotel Tokyo or the Hyatt Regency. Both walkable to the start at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Both have early breakfast on race day. The Park Hotel staff have done this for runners since 2007 and will tape your bib if you ask politely.
Where to eat (carb load, days T-3 to T-1): Tsurutontan in Roppongi for udon. Maisen in Aoyama for tonkatsu (yes, you can have the fried). Konbini onigiri for breakfast, in this order: salmon, kombu, tuna mayo. The 7-Eleven by Shinjuku Station opens at 5am for the race-day grab.
What to skip: The Tsukiji Outer Market sushi crawl at T-1. The wasabi will wreck your gut. The Robot Restaurant. The Skytree on race-eve. Save it for after.
Where to walk (legs loose, not workout): The Imperial Palace gardens loop is exactly 5km on flat gravel. Two laps is your race-week shakeout. Yoyogi Park is also flat and has the dog watchers, which the Carleton household enjoys vicariously while Magnus 🐻❄️ stays in Copenhagen.
Race morning: Trains start at 5am. Be at the start corral by 7:30 for an 9:10 gun. Bring a throwaway long-sleeve. Tokyo in early March is 5-10°C at the start. Bring tape, not blister bandaids. The Asics expo has the good blister tape, but only the Tuesday of race week.
The course is fast. Sub-3 is realistic if you have the fitness. The crowds will carry you from km 25 to 35 through Ginza. Do not look at your watch in Asakusa. The senbei stalls smell like a hug.
