The rules of the road.
The short version
By using TLL, you agree to:
- Tell the truth in your stories. Real trips. Real takes. No filler. No AI-generated travel reports.
- Respect other travelers, the countries you write about, and Magnus 🐻❄.
- Keep ownership of your own writing and photos. We get permission to display them; you can take them down whenever.
- Not use TLL for hate, harassment, illegal stuff, or anything you wouldn't tell a curious eight-year-old.
- Accept that we might edit lightly for clarity, never for tone.
If that sounds reasonable, you've already agreed in spirit. The full version is below.
1. Who you're agreeing with
You're agreeing with That Layover Life ("TLL," "we," "us"), operated by Nancy Carleton, based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
If you're under 16, you cannot use TLL. We require all members to be at least 16.
By creating an account, submitting a story, or even just bookmarking a piece, you accept these Terms and our Privacy Policy.
2. Your account
Creating one
You can sign up with email + password, OR with Google. We use Memberstack to manage accounts. Your account is free, always.
Keeping it secure
You're responsible for your password and for anything done from your account. If you suspect unauthorized access, email hello@thatlayover.life immediately and we'll lock the account.
Deleting it
You can delete your account anytime via /account → Settings → Delete Account. All your stories and submissions are removed within 30 days unless you opt to leave them anonymously published.
One person, one account
Don't impersonate other travelers, brands, or public figures. Pen names are allowed; identity theft is not.
3. Your content
What you submit
When you submit a story, photo, or pet record to TLL, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to display your content on TLL, reformat it for different screen sizes, include it in the rotation gallery and weekly digest, and show it in our marketing if it's particularly excellent (we'll always ask first for major campaigns).
You keep ownership. TLL is a publishing venue, not a copyright transfer. You can take your content down anytime.
The Anonymous Traveler choice
You choose how you're credited on every submission: Named (full name + avatar), Pen name (name of your choosing), or Anonymous Traveler (badge only, no identifying info).
What you can submit
- Real trips you actually took
- Real photos you actually took (or have the right to publish)
- Real opinions about places, food, customs, layovers
- Real pets you actually travel with
What you cannot submit
- Stories generated by AI (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney). The byline is human or it doesn't ship.
- Stories about trips you didn't take
- Stock photography labeled as your own
- Sponsored content disclosed as if it weren't
- Hate, harassment, doxxing, or targeting individuals or groups
- Sexually explicit content
- Illegal content under Danish or international law
- Content that punches down at a country, culture, or its people
Editorial review
Every submission goes through: (1) an AI-assisted first read for factual flags and Editorial Charter alignment, (2) a human review by Nancy or future TLL editorial staff, and (3) a publish-or-revise decision within 48 hours.
We may edit lightly for clarity, grammar, and length. We don't change your voice. If we want a substantive edit, we'll ask you first.
4. The Editorial Charter
All published TLL content follows the Editorial Charter, which boils down to:
- Named travelers. Specific places at specific times. No filler.
- Real numbers, not fake numbers.
- Magnus 🐻❄ appears in his work only.
- We don't punch down.
- AI is a tool for editing, not a co-author. The byline is human.
5. What TLL is, what it isn't
TLL is a community-powered travel storytelling platform. Travelers submit, an editor curates, the library grows.
TLL is not a booking platform, an influencer agency, a social network, or a travel agency.
Future paid tier
TLL is currently free. We may add a paid tier in the future for premium features. Existing accounts will always have a free tier option. We'll never paywall existing published stories.
6. Other people's content
Stories on TLL are written by travelers. We curate, but we don't fact-check every detail. If something looks wrong, please email hello@thatlayover.life. We investigate within 7 days.
Don't copy other travelers' stories or photos for use elsewhere without their permission.
7. Press, partnerships, sponsored content
If you're press: hello@thatlayover.life with subject line "PRESS." We respond within 3 business days.
If you're a partner (tourism board, brand): hello@thatlayover.life with subject "PARTNERSHIPS." All paid placements disclosed inline; we don't run hidden sponsored content.
8. Takedown / DMCA-style requests
If you believe content on TLL infringes your copyright: email hello@thatlayover.life with subject line "TAKEDOWN REQUEST," include your contact info, the URL of the infringing content, identification of your work, a good-faith statement, and your signature. We act within 7 days.
9. Termination
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, submit AI-generated content disguised as personal writing, harass other travelers, or submit fraudulent content. We'll always email you first unless the violation is egregious.
You can terminate your own account anytime via /account.
10. Disclaimers
TLL is provided "as is." Travel stories are personal experiences from named travelers, not professional travel advice. We make no warranties about accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any purpose.
Don't rely on TLL stories for visa requirements, medical advice, safety conditions, or legal status of destinations. Always check official sources before traveling.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent allowed by law, TLL is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the platform.
If you have a claim, our maximum liability is the amount you've paid TLL in the last 12 months (currently €0 for all members).
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by Danish law. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of Copenhagen, Denmark.
If you're an EU consumer, you also have rights under your local consumer protection law, which we respect.
13. Changes to these Terms
We'll update these Terms when our practices change. Material changes will be emailed to all members 30 days in advance and posted as a banner on the site.
This is version 1, effective 20 May 2026.

The trips happened. The opinions are uncut. The third-act sag has been edited out. The world is your layover, but only if you tell the truth about it.
