The 6-Hour Copenhagen Reset (from CPH)

In short

M2 metro from CPH to the centre: 14 minutes, 36 DKK, every four minutes. Smørrebrød at Schønnemann if you booked, the herring plate at Skipperkroen if you did not. Sauna and a harbour swim at La Banchina, April to October.

Getting in and out

By taxi

~350 DKK each way to the city center, 2026 ($50, 30 minutes).

By train or metro

M2 from CPH to Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv, 36 DKK, 14 minutes, every 4 minutes. Buy the ticket at the machine; the card reader on the platform is for monthly passes.

Best food in the airport

Aamanns Etablissement (Terminal 3, by Gate A) for real smørrebrød. Lagkagehuset for the rye sandwich, not its smørrebrød. Skip Joe & The Juice.

The walk-through

🇩🇰 Six hours at CPH. Customs is fast, fifteen minutes at worst, and the Metro takes fourteen. Call it five and a half hours in the city, and spend them like someone who lives here.

Getting in. The M2 leaves from inside the airport, runs every four minutes, and puts you at Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv in about fourteen minutes for 36 DKK. Buy the ticket at the machine. The card reader on the platform is for monthly passes, which nobody warns you about.

Hour one: Nyhavn, briefly

Kongens Nytorv to Nyhavn. Painted houses, boats, tourists. Pretend you are a tourist. You are. Take the photo and move on; the canal is better in the ten minutes before you commit to it than in the hour after.

Hour two: Strøget, the Round Tower, and the bun

Walk Strøget toward Rådhuspladsen. Skip the H&M. Ten minutes in Hay House on Østergade for interior design covet. If it is Wednesday, Sankt Peders Bageri does the cinnamon roll the size of a side plate. It is not a side plate. Then the Round Tower: a spiral ramp, no stairs, built in 1642 for a king who wanted his astronomers to ride horses to the top. Tycho Brahe lived nearby and lost his nose in a duel about mathematics. We are not making this up.

Hour three: lunch, properly

Smørrebrød at Schønnemann if you booked: one shrimp, one rye with roast beef, remoulade and crispy onions, and a Tuborg. If you did not book, Skipperkroen at the harbour and the herring plate. Order one snaps. Two is a problem you discover on the plane.

Hours four and five: the fork

April to October, cross to Christianshavn and walk the canal to La Banchina. Swim. The water is cold and clean. The sauna is 80 DKK for ninety minutes. Bring a towel and bring nothing else. Walk back via Refshaleøen and stop at Lille Bakery on Refshalevej for a cardamom bun.

November to March, when the harbour is a rumour and Tivoli shuts early, take Christiansborg instead. Free above ground, and the tower view beats the airport observation deck by several orders of magnitude.

Hour six: back under the city

M2 from Kongens Nytorv or Nørreport, fourteen minutes. Leave the buffer. Buy a box of Mille's marcipan at the airport for the next leg. Thank me later.

Practical

Visa: Schengen, 90 days in any 180. US, UK and EU passports walk in. Check first if yours is not visa exempt.

Wifi: free and unlimited at CPH, and free at every cafe. The outdoor city network is patchy. Use the cafe one.

Power: Type K, the Danish socket. Type C and E plugs fit it without drama. Most cafes have outlets at the table.

Luggage storage: Bagstore at Terminal 3 arrivals, 60 DKK for six hours, or the Bagshare lockers in Terminal 3 at 80 DKK for six hours. Card at both.

Showers: the Aviator Lounge sells a day pass at 250 DKK with showers, and the Aspire Lounge in Terminal 2 is 35 euro walk up, salmon plate included. The salmon plate is fine. Or sauna at La Banchina and use theirs.
