Getting in and out
By taxi
~30 leva each way to the city center, 2026 ($15, 25 minutes).
By train or metro
Metro line M1, SOF to Serdika station (city center), 1.60 leva, 18 minutes, runs every 4-6 minutes.
Best food in the airport
Cafe Mr. Pizza near Gate B. Better than the Costa Coffee. Lower bar.
The walk-through
🇧🇬 Three hours is tight. Customs takes 20. Metro takes 18 each way. You have an hour and a quarter in the city. Make it count.
Minute 0-18: Metro from SOF to Serdika. Buy the round-trip ticket. Do not mess with the kiosk twice.
Minute 18-35: Walk to Made in Home on ulitsa Angel Kanchev. Order tarator (cold, ask for sparkling water version) and a Shopska salad to split. Pay in cash. Tip 10%. Leave.
Minute 35-55: Walk north up Vitosha Boulevard. Photograph the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Look at the Banya Bashi mosque from across the road. Do not enter (you do not have time, and the dress code is real).
Minute 55-70: Shot of rakia at Hambara, which is a candlelit bar tucked off Sveta Sofia. The bartender is named Vesko. He has been there for nineteen years. Pay 8 leva. Do not mess with the menu.
Minute 70-90: Metro back to SOF. Be at security 75 minutes before boarding. Do not skip this buffer. SOF security is slow on Sundays.
Practical
Visa: Bulgaria is in the EU but not Schengen. Most travelers do not need a visa for under 90 days. Check Bulgaria's specific rules.
Wifi: SOF has free wifi, 60-minute session. The city has decent free wifi in most cafes. Sofia Tourism has a free city wifi network at Vitosha Boulevard.
Power: Type F plug. Bring a Euro adapter.
Luggage storage: SOF arrivals hall, left luggage 10 leva for 6 hours.
Showers: Not available at SOF airside. If you really need one, the Holiday Inn at SOF Terminal 2 sells day-use rooms.
